Inspiring Students to Explore Green Careers through VR

The Client

LTO Noord is a Dutch association representing over 22,000 farmers and horticulturists in the northern Netherlands. The organization supports sustainable, future-proof agriculture by promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and responsible food production.
As part of its mission to inspire the next generation, LTO Noord sought an engaging way to introduce young students to careers in the green sector.

The Challenge

How do you spark interest in farming among 8- to 12-year-olds?
LTO Noord wanted to reach children in primary school with an engaging, interactive tool that could both educate and entertain. The experience needed to be mobile, intuitive, and suitable for use in a classroom setting while showcasing the diversity of farm life.

The Solution

From virtual fields to a bustling farm stall all within arm’s reach.

We created a compact VR setup combining 360° storytelling and playful interaction. Students start their journey by choosing one of three core themes:

  • Plant-based farming
  • Animal-based farming
  • Multifunctional agriculture (MFL)

Each option unlocks a 360° video that gives an inside look into modern farm life, filmed on real locations. After watching, students dive into a short VR minigame of approximately 5 minutes.

Learn by doing and having fun.

Set behind a market stall on a virtual farm, the minigame puts the player in the role of a young farm entrepreneur. One by one, cheerful customers arrive, each asking for specific products from fresh eggs to bottles of milk or bags of grain. The player must quickly gather the correct ingredients from around the stall and hand them over.

Key interactions

  • Animal farming: Feed chickens to collect eggs and grab bottles of milk from the dairy section

  • Plant-based farming: Sow grain seeds, watch them grow in fast-forward, and harvest the crops

  • Multifunctional farming (MFL): Sell products directly to customers, highlighting the business side of modern agriculture

Learning meets challenge

Players are scored based on speed and accuracy, introducing a light form of competition especially effective in classroom settings where students take turns. While there’s no in-game leaderboard, students naturally compared scores in real life, fueling engagement and repeat play.

The result is a blend of fun, discovery, and intuitive learning, all designed to show that farming is much more than mud and tractors it’s about growth, care, business, and the future.

ROI and Results

LTO wrote an article about how effective the VR Experience is, you can read it here.

1. Scalable setup

  • The VR training is designed to fit into a compact 2×2 meter play area, making it easy to deploy in nearly any classroom. Schools and event organizers don’t need complex installations just a VR headset and a screen for spectators. The simple, intuitive controls ensure that students can participate with minimal onboarding time.

2. Tangible impact

  • During classroom sessions, students became visibly enthusiastic while playing the game. According to LTO Noord, the experience sparked real curiosity about agricultural careers students were overheard discussing animals, plants, and food production with peers after their turn. One teacher described the session as “so much fun and very educational,” noting that the experience got students thinking about where their food comes from.

3. Group interaction

  • Thanks to live casting, classmates could watch along as someone played, turning the experience into a shared learning moment. This not only raised excitement but also encouraged peer-to-peer discussions about the green sector and sustainability, reinforcing key messages from the training.

4. Flexible use

  • The training was rolled out during regular school hours, with students taking turns in short 5–10 minute play sessions. This flexible format allowed entire classes to participate and engage in discussions without disrupting the flow of the school day. Teachers appreciated how the experience could seamlessly support existing educational goals around sustainability and career exploration.
