Police – VR Resuscitation Training
The Client
The Digital Learning & Development (L&D) team is part of the human resources department of the Dutch police. They are responsible for the training and development of the Dutch police force. To achieve this, they use innovative learning methods, including virtual reality (VR).
The Question
The police are often the first to arrive at life-threatening situations, such as cardiac arrest. For this reason, every officer at the Police Academy is trained in resuscitation, and this knowledge is maintained through periodic classroom training.
However, organizing these training sessions is a logistical challenge and temporarily makes an officer unavailable for duty. The team sought a way to maintain employees’ knowledge at any location and at a time of their choosing.

The Solution
An application that allows anyone to learn resuscitation without prior knowledge or assistance.
The training begins with a theoretical section that the student must complete, followed by a practical scenario. In this scenario, the officer goes through all the steps, starting with ensuring a safe environment and checking for consciousness.
Steps
After identifying an unconscious person, emergency services (112) are contacted, and the resuscitation process begins. This starts with clearing the airways, followed by performing chest compressions and providing rescue breaths. During chest compressions, the correct rhythm is visually indicated, and the trainee is encouraged to press deep enough.

Using an AED
The use of an AED is also practiced. The officer learns to correctly place the electrodes and follow safety measures before delivering a shock. The final step of the training is to resume chest compressions and rescue breaths.
