Night Watch & Gallery of Honour in 360
VR Owl created two 360-degree VR experiences for the Rijksmuseum, allowing young people and seniors to virtually explore The Night Watch and the Eregalerij in an innovative and accessible way.
The Client
The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is one of the sixteen national museums in the Netherlands. Its collection offers an overview of Dutch art and history, featuring works by 17th-century Dutch masters, with the centerpiece being The Night Watch by Rembrandt.

The Request
A restoration of The Night Watch and the temporary closure of the museum limited the number of visitors. The Rijksmuseum wanted to engage two target audiences with a unique experience: young people and seniors.
For the younger audience, the goal was to introduce art in an accessible and innovative way, while for seniors, the museum aimed to provide a way to experience the museum virtually, especially for those unable to physically visit.

The Solution
VR Owl created two immersive experiences using an 8K 360-degree camera. The first is an experience focused on The Night Watch, designed specifically for a younger audience, while the second is a tour of the Eregalerij (Gallery of Honour).

Dive Deeper into The Night Watch
In the experience Dive Deeper into The Night Watch, visitors are guided by museum tour guide Tyi on a journey through the painting’s history, process, and secrets. Special effects, zoom-ins, and sound effects create a captivating experience that almost pulls you into the artwork.
The Rijksmuseum in VR – The Eregalerij
In the second experience, visitors join guide Bo on a 12-minute tour of the Eregalerij, exploring paintings such as The Milkmaid. The tour provides unique insights into the history, imagery, and techniques behind the artworks, enhanced by high-resolution images and special effects for a deeper understanding of the masterpieces.
