Gemeente Rotterdam – AR Visualizer

Project

We helped the Municipality of Rotterdam use AR to visualize future buildings on-site, improving public understanding and communication around urban development projects.

The Client & Question
The Municipality of Rotterdam wanted to experiment with augmented reality to give residents a glimpse into the future of their city. The goal was to create the most realistic representation possible of upcoming construction projects. The city started with the prestigious Zalmhaven project and, after its success, asked us to visualize the “Piekstraat” development in the same application.

The Solution
Using the developed app, users can view 3D models of the buildings via smartphones and tablets (Android and iOS). By scanning a QR code at a designated viewing point, the device places the building directly on the construction site in AR. The experience is based on the architect’s original 3D models, ensuring a true one-to-one scale representation. For users who are not on location, a scaled version of the model can be placed next to them, which they can move, rotate, and resize freely.

ROI and Results

The app adds a new dimension to environmental communication by visualizing construction plans on-site. This increases public awareness and contributes positively to the commercial development of the projects. These visualizations help improve communication with the surrounding community by clearly showing the impact of upcoming urban developments. The Municipality of Rotterdam and other stakeholders see this form of communication playing a larger role in future construction projects.
