Fugro | Remote Expertise Solution
The Client
Fugro is a Geo-data specialist that collects advanced information about the subsurface and structures. This data is used, for example, in the construction of offshore wind farms and large infrastructure projects. The company operates globally and has more than 30 vessels in service.
Fugro often works in remote locations and sometimes under extreme weather conditions. Projects can last for extended periods of time. During these operations, specialized personnel are required on board for both operation and troubleshooting.
The Challenge
Having specialists stationed on one vessel means they cannot be available on other vessels. Fugro asked VR Owl to help develop a remote support solution that would allow experts to connect with offshore operations.
The first challenge was the remote locations where Fugro operates (mostly at sea), where access to the internet or phone is limited.
The second challenge concerned integration within Fugro’s own IT infrastructure, where user management and security were key requirements.
Finally, strict safety regulations apply within Fugro’s working environments. The remote expert solution—particularly the hardware—had to comply with these standards.
The Software
Remote Expert
Remote Expert is a software solution that enables Fugro to share real-time audio and video via a satellite internet connection. The operator uses an application on an AR headset, while the expert logs in through a web-based interface.
Always Connected
Remote Expert automatically adjusts the connection quality to the optimal settings, ensuring a stable connection even with limited bandwidth. Users can also manually manage connection quality when needed.
Features
The expert can see exactly what the operator sees through the AR headset’s camera. The expert provides instructions via voice communication, supported by built-in noise-cancelling audio functions.
The AR headset also features a display visible to the operator, on which the expert can place markers to highlight specific components or processes.
Integration & Analytics
For Fugro, a cloud version was developed and integrated into their existing IT environment. This allows the organization to maintain control over user permissions and network security.
In addition, Remote Expert includes an analytics feature that provides insights such as the number of calls made.
Hardware
For this project, we partnered with RealWear and used their HMT-1 AR headset. The device is hands-free, designed for industrial use, and is rugged, reliable, and waterproof. Moreover, the RealWear HMT-1 can easily be combined with safety equipment such as helmets and protective glasses.
